Family description Mahonia.

Mahonia are tough evergreen shrubs with hard glossy leaves that can be quite viciously spiked. This plant can withstand a lot of neglect yet still produce a good display of flowers in late winter or early spring. That is no excuse to neglect your plants though. Some Mahonia are strongly scented, and deserve a position where this scent can be appreciated by all the gardens visitors.

General care.

Mahonia requires little assistance from the gardener once planted, but the usual tasks of watering during dry spells still apply, and winter mulching with manure or compost should be a matter of routine. No pruning is required unless the bush is in danger of outgrowing its welcome. In this case, prune in the spring shortly after flowering has finished, cutting the stems fairly hard. It may look a mess for a while, but new shoots will quickly grow to fill the available space. Remember, this can be a nasty plant to handle, so take suitable precautions by wearing thick gloves and handle with care. Due to the sharp nature of the leaves, consideration must be given to location when planting, to prevent injury to passers by, unless you are trying to stop the postman taking a shortcut across the flowerbeds.

Notes on Toxicity or Culinary usage.

Berries are edible and much loved by the birds. Herbal extracts and quack medicines made from the roots.

Mahonia Charity
Mahonia Charity in flower
M. Charity is probably the best variety for the garden and one of the most popular. The flower clusters are larger than the species and quite stongly scented. The robust leaves remain just as sharp.

Species description. Mahonia lomariifolia.

Strong upright branches hold the long leaves with multitudes of exremely sharp spines. Panicles of small yellow flowers appear in mid-late winter and are nicely scented.
