Weigela is a good choice for a difficult position in the garden as this plant will handle both shade and dry conditions. A sunny aspect will give better flowers though. This is a deciduous shrub that can produce new branches up to 2 metres tall in a single season. Flowers appear en-masse in late spring on the branches that grew the previous year. Dwarf varieties are available, but these tend to be slow to establish. Variegated forms are also available to give added summer interest.
Once flowering has finished, Weigela requires drastic pruning if it is to be kept in good shape and provide the maximum floral display next year. All the flowered wood should be cut out entirely, back to the main framework of trunk and primary branches. This action will force strong new shoots to appear, and these will grow up to 2 metres vertically in only a few months. The weight of the flowers on these stems will cause these stems to arch over to display the flowers to the best. Winter care is the provision of a top dressing of compost or manure over the root area. Slow acting fertilizers may be applied at the same time.
